Lemosho Route – 8 Days Scenic Kilimanjaro Trek

Overview

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most scenic and least crowded route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m). Approaching the mountain from the western side, it offers excellent acclimatization, breathtaking landscapes, and a high summit success rate. This route gradually ascends through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and glacial zones before reaching the iconic Uhuru Peak.

Why Choose the Lemosho Route
  • Highest summit success rate on Kilimanjaro
  • Excellent acclimatization profile
  • Least crowded approach with spectacular scenery
  • Ideal for first-time climbers and photographers

Best time to climb: All year round

Day by Day Itinerary

  • Altitude: 2,100m – 2,650m

  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

  • Distance: ~6 km

After an early breakfast, drive from Moshi or Arusha to Lemosho Gate for registration and briefing. Begin your trek through dense rainforest rich in wildlife, including colobus monkeys and exotic birdlife. The trail gently ascends to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp, your first overnight stop.

Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp

  • Altitude: 2,650m – 3,500m

  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

  • Distance: ~8 km

Leave the rainforest behind and enter the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful landscapes. Vegetation becomes sparse as you hike across rolling moorland with expansive views of the mountain.

Overnight: Shira 1 Camp

  • Altitude: 3,500m – 3,850m

  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

  • Distance: ~7 km

A relatively gentle day across the Shira Plateau allows for gradual acclimatization. Enjoy panoramic views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding plains. This shorter trekking day is crucial for altitude adjustment.

Overnight: Shira 2 Camp

  • Altitude: 3,850m – 4,600m – 3,950m

  • Hiking Time: 6–7 hours

  • Distance: ~10 km

Hike toward Lava Tower, reaching 4,600m for acclimatization before descending to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy significantly improves summit success. The Barranco Valley offers dramatic views of the Barranco Wall and glaciers above.

Overnight: Barranco Camp

  • Altitude: 3,950m – 4,035m

  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

  • Distance: ~6 km

Begin the day by ascending the famous Barranco Wall, a fun and non-technical scramble offering incredible views. Continue through alpine terrain to Karanga Camp, where you rest and prepare for higher altitude.

Overnight: Karanga Camp

  • Altitude: 4,035m – 4,673m

  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

  • Distance: ~4 km

A short but steep hike leads to Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit attempt. After an early dinner and briefing, rest and prepare for the midnight ascent.

Overnight: Barafu Camp

  • Altitude: 4,673m – 5,895m – 3,100m

  • Hiking Time: 12–14 hours

  • Distance: ~17 km

Depart around midnight for the summit climb. Trek past Stella Point and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, descend carefully to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.

Overnight: Mweka Camp

  • Altitude: 3,100m – 1,640m

  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

  • Distance: ~10 km

Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificates. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for hotel accommodation or onward travel.
