Machame Route – 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing

Overview

The Machame Route, often referred to as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m). Known for its varied landscapes, excellent acclimatization profile, and rewarding summit success rate, Machame is ideal for adventurous climbers seeking both challenge and breathtaking scenery.

This route ascends through lush rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit zones before reaching Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point.

Why Choose the Machame Route
  • High summit success rate
  • Exceptional scenery and terrain variety
  • Excellent acclimatization profile
  • Popular and well-established route with strong support infrastructure

Best time to climb: All year round

Day by Day Itinerary

  • Altitude: 1,800m – 3,000m

  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

  • Distance: ~11 km

After breakfast, transfer to Machame Gate for registration and briefing. Begin your trek through dense montane rainforest, where you may encounter colobus monkeys and tropical birdlife. The trail gradually ascends to Machame Camp, set among giant heathers and moss-covered trees.

Overnight: Machame Camp

  • Altitude: 3,000m – 3,840m

  • Hiking Time: 4–6 hours

  • Distance: ~5 km

Leave the forest behind and climb steep ridges onto the Shira Plateau. Vegetation becomes sparse, revealing expansive views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding plains. This shorter trekking day supports gradual acclimatization.

Overnight: Shira Camp

  • Altitude: 3,840m – 4,600m – 3,950m

  • Hiking Time: 6–7 hours

  • Distance: ~10 km

Trek toward Lava Tower to aid acclimatization before descending to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” approach significantly improves summit success. The camp sits beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall with sweeping views of glaciers.

Overnight: Barranco Camp

  • Altitude: 3,950m – 4,035m

  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

  • Distance: ~6 km

Ascend the famous Barranco Wall, a hands-on scramble that is challenging yet non-technical. Continue across alpine terrain to Karanga Camp, the final water stop before Barafu Camp.

Overnight: Karanga Camp

  • Altitude: 4,035m – 4,673m

  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

  • Distance: ~4 km

A short but steep climb leads to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. After an early dinner and final briefing, rest and prepare for the midnight ascent.

Overnight: Barafu Camp

  • Altitude: 4,673m – 5,895m – 3,100m

  • Hiking Time: 12–14 hours

  • Distance: ~17 km

Begin your summit attempt around midnight. Climb steadily to Stella Point and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebration and photos, descend carefully to Mweka Camp.

Overnight: Mweka Camp

  • Altitude: 3,100m – 1,640m

  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

  • Distance: ~10 km

Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificates. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for post-trek accommodation or onward travel.
